Blairgowrie Destination Race Update Due to a Gale warning issued by the Bureau of Meteorology for Port Phillip and for the safety of boats and crews, ORCV’s Race Committee decided to cancel this weekend’s Discount Yachting Winter Series Destination Race to Blairgowrie and the Novice Return Series Race. The Discount Yachting Winter Series Destination, Race to Blairgowrie, is scheduled to re-sail on Saturday, 2nd September 2023, and the Novice Return Series Race will re-sail on Sunday, 3rd September 2023. The Novice Return Race distance will be adjusted to ensure all sailors return for Father’s Day dinner. All pre-purchased meals will be fully refunded within the next week. All sailors, skipper and crew, should be confident in their ability to operate the radio equipment on any boat as you never know when you will need to use. While obtaining your Marine Radio Operators Certificate of Proficiency is a very important step it only recently included a limited practical component. This hands-on practical workshop provides the practical experience required to deal with routine radio communications, position reporting skeds, communication with limited coast stations, distress traffic and using the local VHF repeater network. General confidence in using a microphone can take some time to acquire. The ORCV has developed this hands-on workshop to provide new skippers and crew with the opportunity to gain the experience required to operate marine radios with confidence. SCARLET RUNNER | Skipper Robert Date | Carkeek 43 Elapsed time: 2 days 3 hours 56 mins 53 secs Launched in 2022 and built with the Melbourne Hobart in mind, it has also competed in Lincoln races where its design has been tweaked for speed improvements. This Carkeek 43 is specifically designed as a fast 40+ and has delivered outstanding results on the super-competitive European circuit. Designed by Shaun Carkeek and built-in Melbourne by Composite Constructions. With an all-black hull, its overall displacement is approximately 6 tonne and has a makeup of E-Glass, water ballast, electric drive and numerous racing sails. Rob competes in local ocean racing from Melbourne building young and effective crews, with high levels of commitment and loyalty. 1. After finishing the race we decided to put up our spinnaker and sail back to Sandringham. Collette and Natasha are relaxing.
2. Looking forward with our 'Gennaker' sail flying - a cross between a traditional symmetrical spinnaker and a Genoa (typical large headsail overlapping the mast). This kind of sail is also known as just a asymmetric spinnaker.
3. With the boat level heading down wind, the drinks and snacks have come out.
4. Back at the harbour, the whole crew poses for a photo. Names are (left to right, top to bottom): Mick, Ron, Mylene, Simon, Collette, Darren, Natasha, Floyd.
5. Another group photo. Instead of saying "cheese", sailors shout "ease!!" in a pressing voice. This is a joke about having to scramble to ease the sails during an unexpected gust to avoid the boat becoming over powered.
6. With the sun setting, the boat is pretty much packed up and boat co-owner Alex (who wasn't onboard that day) chats with crew members Mick and Darren.
7. Collette and Mylene join the conversation on the dock.

South-westerly winds of 10 to 20 knots gave the fleet a fast reaching ‘drag race’ from the start and along the Great Ocean Road to the finish. Pods of smiling dolphins raced alongside numerous boats - and kept up - while a rainbow stretched across the course area. What a way to celebrate the 70th race! Launched in 1976, Brian purchased Invincible in 2020. This Farr 1104, might be old and small, but there is plenty of fight in the dog. Good food is always a very important element onboard MRV. Lisa Blair who recently completed a solo circumnavigation of Antarctica invites you to come and join her for an evening at Royal Melbourne Yacht Squadron on Thursday 14th July. After being demasted in the first attempt in 2017, Lisa set out from Albany in February 2022 and after 92 days at sea became the first female and fastest solo unassisted sailor to circumnavigate Antarctica.
