Our destination races foster connections and the opportunity to share our passion for ocean racing with partner clubs like the Apollo Bay Sailing Club. This year, three dedicated Flying 15 sailors from the Apollo Bay Sailing Club will be joining the fleet embarking on the momentous 70th Anniversary race to Apollo Bay. Anton Tibbets, who has been eagerly observing the race's arrival for the past decade, will be setting sail aboard White Spirit. He's been watching the weather and is keen to learn how more about strategic race planning, navigation, and teamwork on a larger vessel, Anton is eagerly looking forward to the exhilarating challenges that lie ahead. Teaming up with his trusted sailing partner Rob Van Geneijgen, Igor Tesic will be navigating the waters on board Cadibarra. As they approach Apollo Bay, their local knowledge may prove advantageous in navigating the unpredictable winds off Cape Patton and the eddies surrounding the harbour. Apollo Bay offers numerous vantage points to witness the fleet's arrival, whether it be from the break wall, the back greens of the golf course, or the breathtaking heights of Wild Dog Road. South-westerly winds of 10 to 20 knots gave the fleet a fast reaching ‘drag race’ from the start and along the Great Ocean Road to the finish. The ocean race heading to Port Fairy got underway in light breezes at 3.30pm. White Spirit was first over the line with Jaffa first to navigate and exit the Port Phillip Heads. One of the most seaworthy boats ever designed. Notable voyages. Several single-handed sailing circumnavigations: Jon Sanders in Perie Banou, David Dicks in Seaflight and Jesse Martin in Lionheart. Congratulations to Nigel Jones and Cam McKenzie and crew of Ginan, the overall winner of the West Offshore Products and Coastal Sprint 3. Great to some regulars and new entrants trying these short course offshore races with all the crews back through the heads before 5pm. In light conditions, they sailed a shortened eastern course with a start outside the heads in light winds. With the 70th Apollo Bay being the last in the coastal series, many including Ginan will now set their sights on being part of the 70th-anniversary race and the series championship. AMS

Maritimo 11 has won line honours in the Ocean Racing Club of Victoria’s 50th anniversary Melbourne to Hobart Yacht Race in Hobart 29 December.
In a time of 2 day 1 hours 22 minutes and 2 seconds, Michael Spies skippered the 54-foot Schumacher to victory in a race which tested the resilience and patience of the entire fleet, but none more so than the Maritimo crew.

Clare shared helming responsibilities with her dad Tim. At 23 years old, she is not new to helming. 1. After finishing the race we decided to put up our spinnaker and sail back to Sandringham. Collette and Natasha are relaxing.
2. Looking forward with our 'Gennaker' sail flying - a cross between a traditional symmetrical spinnaker and a Genoa (typical large headsail overlapping the mast). This kind of sail is also known as just a asymmetric spinnaker.
3. With the boat level heading down wind, the drinks and snacks have come out.
4. Back at the harbour, the whole crew poses for a photo. Names are (left to right, top to bottom): Mick, Ron, Mylene, Simon, Collette, Darren, Natasha, Floyd.
5. Another group photo. Instead of saying "cheese", sailors shout "ease!!" in a pressing voice. This is a joke about having to scramble to ease the sails during an unexpected gust to avoid the boat becoming over powered.
6. With the sun setting, the boat is pretty much packed up and boat co-owner Alex (who wasn't onboard that day) chats with crew members Mick and Darren.

VERTIGO | Skipper Tim & Clare Olding | Summit 35 Elapsed time: 3 days 9 hours 5 mins 9 secs Competing in the Melbourne Hobart, Vertigo had the youngest skipper in the race. Clare shared helming responsibilities with her dad Tim. At 23 years old, she is not new to helming. Clare has skippered twice in the Australian Women's Keelboat Regatta where she placed 3rd last year and also won the Alan Collins Rookie Skipper award.🏆 In 2021, with larger boats competing in their division Vertigo took line honors in the ORCV Rudder Cup🥇 and in 2019 Vertigo won at Launceston Hobart🥇🏆. HOW BIZARRE | Skipper Scott Robinson | Seaquest Rp36 Race time: 2 days 22 hours 12 mins 57 secs How Bizarre was launched in 2007 and was purchased by Scott in February 2015. Since owning How Bizarre, Scott has enjoyed successful racing in both club and offshore events. Now sailing out of Royal Melbourne Yacht Squadron, How Bizarre has had many ORCV wins. 2019 was a great year for victories. In 2019 How Bizarre was successful in Melbourne Stanley pulling of a rare triple 1st place win in IRC, AMS & PHS. In the same year, they finished 2nd in Line Honors in the Melbourne Devonport Rudder cup. In the Bass Strait Series 3 races a double 1st in IRC, PHS and 2nd AMS. Continuing racing in 2020 they finished 3rd IRC in Melbourne Devonport Rudder Cup. In 221 How Bizarre finished 1st IRC and 2nd AMS Melbourne to Apollo Bay. For the last five years, Jaffa has been based in Melbourne. Andrew has a 2-year training program that provides a consistent crew for longer-term offshore and general racing programs. One of their crew, Nick McGuigan, has completed the 'Westcoaster' more than 10 times. Jaffa is a boat specifically designed for the west coast conditions. Jaffa is not new to the 'Westcoaster' as she has previously competed in the 2016 and 2017 Melbourne Hobart. Joker on Tourer is fitted out for short-handed racing, Grant chose his co-skipper well; Peter Dowdney has enjoyed many career highlights, including getting the call up to do bow on Steak ‘N Kidney in the 1986-87 America’s Cup as a 20 year-old, and racing at other major events around the world. ‘The Kid’ has long worked at Ronstan, so is handy for repair and replacement of gear at sea. The two have raced the boat both fully crewed and double-handed, including placing third overall in the open fleet in the 2020 Melbourne to Devonport Race 'Rudder Cup' double-handed. Peter who sailed his first 'Westcoaster' in 1983 and commented “1983 was my first major race. We got line honours on the 38-foot Freelance, and it forged my passion for ocean racing. HARTBREAKER | Skipper Anthony Walton | Reichel/Pugh 46 Race time: 2 days 04 hours 39 mins 11 secs Based out of Royal Brighton Yacht Club, Hartbreaker has successfully campaigned the last 7 x Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Races over the last 8 years, with the best result finishing 21st on Line Honours in 2014. This was the debut race for the boat in the 'Westcoaster'. Hartbreaker is no stranger to ORCV races. She has competed in the ORCV Winter Series and King Island finishing 1st on Line Honours and 1st on AMS. “It’s a terrific race, I think that the number of boats this year has just made it so exciting, and with the interstate boats coming in, even if they do come and take the trophy, its alright with us – it’s just great to have so many good boats and people doing the race – new boats, old boats, mums and dads, it’s just awesome.” Janet Wilks, a nurse-turned-yacht rigger originally from Alabama in the United States who sailed on Tony Walton’s Reichel/Pugh 46 Hartbreaker, wore a smile from ear to ear as she recounted her experiences after a restful night. Lisa Blair who recently completed a solo circumnavigation of Antarctica invites you to come and join her for an evening at Royal Melbourne Yacht Squadron on Thursday 14th July. After being demasted in the first attempt in 2017, Lisa set out from Albany in February 2022 and after 92 days at sea became the first female and fastest solo unassisted sailor to circumnavigate Antarctica. 1. Motoring up to Port Melbourne for the start.
2. Pottering around the start with over 100 other boats.
3. Spinnakers are out for the light northerly winds 5 minutes after start.
4. Crew member Natasha poses with many other yachts flying their colourful spinnakers in the background.
5. The fleet gets closer together a bit over 10 minutes into the race.
6. With the sails set, Natasha’s shirt paints an accurate picture of fair weather sailing: “my drinking team has a sailing problem”. She is of Russian background.
7. Cruising at a steady pace down to Mornington, Simon, Mick and Ron relax in the fine weather.
8. Mick relieves Ron from the helm so he can join the rest of the crew with their feet up and the boat heeling nicely on a tach.
9. Sandringham registered racing yacht “Arch de Triomphe” has finished the race and is cruising back to Sandringham.
10. With the city in the background, there is a mix between yachts cruising back and yachts still racing. We are about 10 minutes from finishing ourselves.

Sailed double-handed by owner Alex Toomey and crew-mate Andrew Hibbert, Ryujin has won the Ocean Racing Club of Victoria’s 2022 Apollo Bay Race. Out of a 31-boat fleet, Damien King's Margaret Rintoul V took line honours in the 52 nautical mile race across the board. The final race of the ORCV's summer season each year, the Apollo Bay Race decides the Coastal Championship and the Offshore Championship, which were won by John Strahan’s True Colours and Justin Brenan's Alien respectively. Tim Olding’s Summit 35 Vertigo has won the Ocean Racing Club of Victoria (ORCV) 55 nautical mile West Offshore Products Coastal Sprint Race. Vertigo is now second in the overall ORCV Coastal Championship. John Chipp’s Dehler 46, Hot Chipps took line honours in 7 hours 37 minutes and 17 seconds.
